Recently, WWSH was approved for a grant, for the installation of twenty-five historic markers to be placed around the community, beginning in the Summer of 2021. This, dear friends, is only a beginning.
The goal of While We Are Still Here’s Heritage Markers Project is to make Harlem’s history unavoidable.
In February 2020, WWSH held a public forum to garner peoples’ choices as to what and whom should be memorialized.
This informed our choice of the initial twenty-five markers that commemorate people from Augusta Savage and Malcolm X, as well as honoring the Lenape, the Indigenous nation on whose land Harlem exists.
