SIGNS OF THE TIMES: Harlem Heritage Markers Project

Recently, the Pomeroy Foundation approved a grant, to support  the SIGNS OF THE TIMES: Harlem Heritage Markers Project, which will install twenty-five historic markers around the community, beginning in the Spring of 2023 This, dear friends, is only a beginning.

The goal of While We Are Still Here’s SIGNS OF THE TIMES: Heritage Markers Project is to make Harlem’s history unavoidable.

In February 2020, WWSH held a public forum to garner peoples’ choices as to what and whom should be memorialized.

This informed our choice of the initial twenty-five markers that commemorate people such as Queen Mother Moore, Malcolm X, and Yuri Kochiyama. There is also a marker to  honor the Lenape, the Indigenous nation upon whose land Harlem exists.
